Begin your Moonstone Trek with an early morning pickup from your hotel, heading towards the historically significant Killarumiyoc, the Moon Temple. Here, amidst ancient relics, enjoy a gourmet breakfast that sets the tone for the adventure ahead.
After a 40-minute drive to Varpiso (3,257 meters), you’ll meet your equine companions and start the trek. The first segment is a rewarding three and a half hour ascent to Huatta, an ancient pre-Inca fortress at 3,924 meters. This site offers a fascinating glimpse into history, with ongoing excavations revealing insights from millennia past.
Following lunch and exploration at Huatta, your journey continues through diverse terrain for another three and a half hours until reaching Chillipawa. At 3,750 meters, this welcoming village offers a unique cultural experience, highlighting the warm hospitality Peru is known for.

Day 2: Chillipawa to Chancachuco – Scaling New Heights

After lunch, ascend to the trek’s highest point, the Puccacasa pass at 4,643 meters. Here, breathtaking views await, including the majestic Mt. Ausangate and the impressive Mount Veronica. The descent from Puccacasa is a two and a half hour journey through landscapes adorned with llamas, alpacas, and traditional potato farms, ending at the Chancachuco campsite at 4,177 meters. As evening descends, enjoy a hearty dinner with the stunning backdrop of the Huaynay Glaciers.

The journey then turns uphill for two hours towards Inti Punku (the Sun Gate) and the Inca Quarry. The final leg of the day’s trek is a gentle 45-minute walk, leading you to your camp at the Inca Quarry (3,525 meters). Relax and enjoy a leisurely evening with a happy hour, a plentiful dinner, and breathtaking sunset views over the Sacred Valley.
