5-Day Salkantay Trek & Short Inca Trail Combo

Tour Itinerary

Explore our expertly designed itinerary below, crafted to showcase breathtaking views and provide unique adventures every step of the way.

Day 1: Departure from Cusco, Humantay Lake Discovery, and Ichupata Camp

Start your day bright and early at 4:00 a.m., as our exclusive travel team picks you up from your accommodation in Cusco. After a two-hour scenic ride, we arrive at the town of Mollepata, the ideal spot for a quick, self-sponsored breakfast. As we resume our journey toward Soraypampa, relish the sight of quaint towns and the distant, majestic Salkantay Mountain.

Upon reaching Soraypampa, we prepare for our first trek. The immediate vistas of surrounding mountains like Salkantay and Humantay make for an awe-inspiring start. From here, a 1.5-hour uphill hike takes us to the breathtaking Humantay Lake, where its turquoise waters provide a mesmerizing backdrop for photos.

After soaking in the beauty, we return to Soraypampa for a freshly-prepared lunch. Post-meal, the adventure continues with a 4-hour hike toward our first campsite at Ichupata. We conclude the day with a magical stargazing session guided by your expert trek leader, followed by a hearty dinner.

Accommodation: Camping
Meals: Lunch, Tea, and Dinner
Hiking: Approx. 7-8 hours, 12 km

Awake to the comforting aroma of hot coca tea delivered straight to your tent. After a wholesome breakfast, we set out to conquer today’s challenge—reaching the Incachiriaska Pass, locally known as the “Frozen Inca Pass.” Along the way, marvel at the captivating views of glaciers and Salkantay Mountain, not to mention the possible sightings of local eagles, hawks, and condors.

Reaching the summit of the pass is exhilarating, and the panoramic views make it well worth the strenuous climb. After enjoying some high-altitude tranquility, we begin our descent. A delicious lunch awaits us two hours downhill at a picturesque spot.

Post-lunch, a two-hour hike lands us at our next camp in Pampacahuana. Rest your tired muscles and relax during our “mountain happy hour,” featuring tea and snacks, before indulging in a sumptuous dinner.

Accommodation: Camping
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Tea, and Dinner
Hiking: Approx. 8-9 hours, 15 km

Start the day with a nourishing breakfast before we begin our descent toward Paucarcancha. This fascinating Inca site is rich with historical architecture, including terraces and dwellings, offering plenty of opportunities for exploration and photography. As we proceed, we join a section of the Classic Inca Trail, where even more historical ruins await.

After a full day of hiking and absorbing rich Incan history, we reach Km 82, where lunch is served. From here, we transfer you to the charming town of Ollantaytambo. Here, you can relax and rejuvenate in a cozy hotel, reflecting on the journey so far while enjoying a local dinner experience.

Accommodation: Hotel
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Hiking: Approx. 7-8 hours, 16 km

As dawn breaks, we make our way to the train station for a 6:10 a.m. departure to Km 104. This marks the starting point of our trek for the day. After alighting, we clear the checkpoint and are greeted by the ancient Incan site of Chachabamba. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the intricate temples and sacred spaces as our guide walks you through its historical significance.

The day’s hike then transitions to a scenic uphill walk, culminating at the Wiñaywayna Inca Temple. Known to mean “forever young” in Quechua, this site offers both historical and visual delights. After a brief exploration and a quick snack, we set forth on the final leg of our trek to Machu Picchu. The journey takes us through the famous Sun Gate, the first point from which you can view the enigmatic ancient city.

The afternoon light graces Machu Picchu, offering you excellent photo opportunities with fewer crowds. We then take a bus down to the town of Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu town. Here, you can relax and unwind in your hotel, eagerly anticipating tomorrow’s exploration.

Accommodation: Hotel
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Hiking: Approx. 6-7 hours, 12 km

Start the final day of your adventure with an early breakfast at your hotel. We board the first bus back to Machu Picchu to capitalize on the serene morning atmosphere. Your guide will offer an in-depth tour of this ancient citadel, explaining its historical importance and the theories that surround its purpose and construction. If you opted for it, this is also the day to climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (permits permitting).

As the midday sun starts to shine down on Machu Picchu, we head back to Aguas Calientes. Enjoy a leisurely lunch in town (not included in the package) and maybe do some last-minute souvenir shopping. In the afternoon, we catch the train back to Ollantaytambo or Poroy train station, depending on availability. From there, a private van takes you back to your accommodation in Cusco, concluding this unforgettable adventure.
