This 2 days prominent path is the Sacred Trail (commonly referred to as the “short Inka Trail”) and is an original Inka access restored in 1996. It covers a distance of just ten kilometers and can be trekked in one day. The circuit begins at km. 104 (from the railroad) and crosses a suspension bridge over the Vilkanota river that leads to a ticket booth.
From there a five minute walk takes one to the archaeological area of Chachabamba. Continuing uphill, the route allows one a view of the Choqesuysuy ruins, the hydroelectric plant and the Wiñaywayna and Intipata terraces. After that it passes near a waterfall that originates from the higher levels of Phuyupatamarka. Finally, the trail arrives in Winaywayna from which it connects Intipunku and Machupicchu.
In summary, the Inka Trail were used primarily for pilgrimage to Machupicchu and the urban centers located along their routes served as rest stops andpurification places before entering Machupicchu.
