At 9:00 am, we will pick up our clients from their hotel in Cusco, and we will go to the town of Maras to meet our Rider and the Horses. There will be a short talk before we mount our horses and begin our journey.
We will first pass through the salt mines of Maras, which are on the slopes of Mount Qaqawiñay, where thousands of small carved stone pools are filled with a flow of saltwater diverted from the interior of Qaqawiñay as they have been since the Inca times. This artisanal salt extraction process creates a visually striking site of varied hues and textures due to sunlight bouncing off different salt levels. The people of Maras jointly manage the site.
During our journey along the valley’s dirt road, we will enjoy impressive landscapes surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of the Andes Mountains. We pass through small towns and crops that serve as subsistence for the native inhabitants. We will go to the Archaeological Complex of Moray (3200 masl), an agricultural laboratory where they experimented with seeds and the development of crops. Each concentric circular terrace replicates a different microclimate.
We will return to the city of Cusco around 3:00 pm.
