The Ausangate mountain is located between the districts of Ocongate and Pitumarca. The northeast side of the snow is located in Ocongate and the southwest side corresponds to the district of Pitumarca. It is the most representative mountain in the Andes of southern Peru and the highest in the Vilcanota mountain range.
The main height is 6,382 m.a.s.l belonging to the Janca natural region, this area is characterized by the presence of extensive turquoise lagoons, high plains and stone forests. The peak rises to more than five thousand meters of height and also with tongues of ice that fall of vertiginous way forming glacial lagoons such as Pillpi cocha, Ausangate cocha, lagoon of Ocongate.
The Ausangate circuit is one of the great attractions of the districts of Ocongate and Pitumarca. The temperatures in the day range from 11 to 13 degrees Celsius and at night it drops from 4 to -10 degrees Celsius this in the months of June and July. In this area live peasant communities who maintain ancestral Andean culture in force despite many centuries of imposition and Western cultural pressure.
One of the areas that have experienced few changes is precisely the high Andean communities that are located relatively close to the Ausangate peak. For example, people from the area can be seen grazing their llamas, alpacas, guanacos.
It is common to find rocky blooms that rise to more than five thousand meters high where wild animals inhabit: vizcacha and birds like eaglet, Andean carpenter, huallatas. In the rural communities around the Ausangate, agriculture is largely traditional and concentrates on the production of a great variety of tubers, among which the oca, the year, the ulluco and the potato stand out.
There is also variability of alpacas and llamas as well as vicuñas giving a unique touch to the local landscape. This tour can be done at any time of the year, but it is recommended to do it between the months of May and September because in these months the climate is very favorable to be able to better enjoy the surrounding landscape, since in other months the Rains are very frequent.
